The Flute Studio was established in 1990; 120 students from 19 countries have attended to date. Many are in orchestras worldwide or are teaching The course theme is ‘the flute, and nothing but the flute’ THE COURSEis of one or two years and is intended primarily for postgraduates, though undergraduates are sometimes accepted. The aim of the course is to increase a student’s chances of employment. Students attend two weekly master classes, one followed by a Study Session. The first class is a scales/technique/memory class with the emphasis on technique and tone. The remainder of the class is devoted to exercises and finishing with studies (études). The Study Session focuses on background information on the flute and includes the examination of old flutes, unusual flutes, chamber music repertoire, CD’s, cassettes, books, and includes talks on professional career problems, stage presentation, stage manner, and publicity. These sessions also include basic flute maintenance and repair, head joint making and flute construction. Students will have access to materials including 78’s records on cassette and MD; a number of 18th and 19th century original flute tutors; archive material relating to the flute, including the past journals of all the world’s flute societies; more than 200 antique and ethnic flutes, including a number of modern unusual flutes. The second class focuses on the common flute and orchestral repertoire. Transcriptions for four flutes are used of the popular orchestral repertoire so that students become familiar with the orchestral background to the solos. The Studio Music Library of 5000+ items also contains all the world’s well known flute books and dissertations, including rare material, and books in other languages. There are around 850 cassettes, with 500 CDs and MDs. Students complete a weekly listening project of CDs of the world’s great players, and two longer projects on the history of the flute. Students gain a minimal working knowledge of the treble recorder and the baroque flute, instruments basic tuition being provided. Since 1990, eleven former students have become professional traverso players. A piccolo session with an London orchestral specialist, and a class on baroque practice and style is usually part of the curriculum. Three Sonata Classes with the piano are arranged, and other classes according to needs. Flute performance to a high standard is the main aim of the course. The Studio has a new piano, cassette copying machines, a commercial photocopier, cassette and MD and CD recording facilities. Student recitals take place in the village’s 12th century church, and in Canterbury. Visits to flute recitals in London, and to William Bennett’s master classes at the Royal Academy of Music in London are also arranged, and students will find it convenient to attend London’s numerous concerts. The Studio intake is limited to five/six students each year. The Course is of 25 weeks duration, though usually longer. It begins in late September through to the beginning of May *SECOND YEARStudents intending to stay longer may do so by agreement during the first year. The Course is broadly similar, except that students may have some individual lessons, and will be required to research in a topic for which they will have extra attention. THE PLACE.
